According to some inflation web site calculators I've run, $50 in 1943 is equivalent to somewhere around $680 in 2013 dollars. So, not pocket change for most folks. But, as mothers do, Mamaw Weathersby provided for their son and wired him the money.
Daddy would be on his way in the next few days to Camp Pendleton for training. Somewhere in this time frame, he received the Eagle, Globe & Anchor and became a Marine.
