September 1943 - Boot Camp

70 years ago, Daddy was in the first two weeks of boot camp.  This was a whole new life for someone as pampered and spoiled as he was.  I'll spare details, but there was plenty of proof as to just how spoiled he (and probably his sister) were.  My grandparents were great people, and provided a wonderful life on a quaint city street that was a scene right out of a movie.
Once the day had arrived for Daddy to depart for boot camp, his father drove him to the train station to see him off.  I'm sure Mamaw Weathersby and "Junior's" sister just couldn't stand to see him leave and didn't go.  Daddy told our mother that the train station was the first...and only...time he saw his father cry.  I'm sure this was an occurrence repeated a few hundred thousand times all across the country during this time of war.

According to the latest newsletter from the World War II Museum in New Orleans, they are starting to simulate the train station experience from the time a visitor enters the museum.  The museum ticket counter resembles train station ticket counters from the 40's and visitors enter a simulated train car at the museum "Union Station".  This immersive experience begins your tour of the museum and more enhancements to this part of the tour are in the works.

More to follow on some of Daddy's boot camp experiences.  He remained there until mid November
